Twin Cities Musician Zachary Scot Johnson Performs December 3

Singer-songwriter Zachary Scot Johnson is known to captivate listeners with the lush emotional landscape with his acoustic fusion blend of blues and folk, alt-country and pop, and rock-n-roll, creating a unique musical flavor. According to one critic, "Zachary Scot Johnson has the smooth guitar lines of James Taylor, the spunk of Joni Mitchell, the vocals of Elvis Costello, and the songwriting ability of all three." He performs on keyboard, guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin, and dobro. His newly developed holiday concert will feature both familiar and lesser known Christmas gems.  Johnson has spent the last 10 years touring nationally with artists such as Grammy winners Shawn Colvin and Keb' Mo' and movie stars/musicians Kevin Costner, Rita Wilson and others. His fourth CD will be released this month, and his music is available on iTunes and Amazon. Plan to take a break from the holiday rush and treat yourself with this uplifting, relaxing hour of song on Monday, December 3, 6:30 p.m., in the large meeting room. This event is sponsored by the Arrowhead Library System and funded by money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

King of Devil's Island

"King of Devil's Island" is the latest stunning film to come out of Scandinavia. Released last year, this fact-based Norwegian offering stars Swedish star Stellan Skarsgård (who played Martin Vanger in the American version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") as the cold, aloof governor of a boys' reformatory school. The island prison, Bastøy, which operated until the late 1940s, was characterized by a regiment of physical labor, discipline and abuse, all under the guidance of Christian charitable organizations. The arrival of new boys Erling (Benjamin Helstad) and Ivar (Magnus Langlete) sparks a chain of events that ultimately ignite rebellion. Helstad was honored with Best Newcomer Performance at the Edinburgh Film Festival, and the film won the best picture award at the Norwegian International Film Festival in 2011. The film's Norwegian setting is stark yet picturesque. Due to subject matter, "King of Devil's Island" is recommended for mature viewers. Sons of Norway-Heimsyn Lodge will provide refreshments. Tuesday, November 13, 6:30 p.m. Norwegian with subtitles.
