Author/illustrator entertains families

Deb Frasier gave an entertaining program at the library this week on creating picturebooks. She is the author of nearly a dozen, including, On the Day You Were Born, A Birthday Cake is No Ordinary Cake, and Miss Alaineus. Frasier's pictures are collages. "I am still putting bits of things together, just as I did as a young girl," says Frasier. "I usually write the text first, and then create the pictures. I carry a small journal with me everywhere I go, and it acts as my 'butterfly net,' helping me to capture ideas that fly through my brain." After her talk, Deb answered questions, visited with children, and sold some of her books.

The fun begins south of the border

Kids celebrated a Mexican birthday party as part of Look What's Cookin' at your Library programming. Children were challenged to build the highest cake with a stack of decorated boxes. The winner was Jordan (pictured above) whose cake stretched 266 cm. For his effort, Jordan received a gift certificate compliments of Mexico Lindo Restaurant in Cloquet. Other activities included pinata bashing, a Mexican Hat Dance, Mexican trivia, and birthday cake for everybody. Special thanks to Morgan, Angie, and Ally (pictured above) who volunteer their time to make these programs successful.

Kids Enjoy Healthy Snacks

More than 40 children dropped by the library to learn about healthy snacks from Kristen, a student who was doing a summer internship through Carlton County's Public Health Services. Kids learned to identify foods from the five groups of the Food Pryamid, colored healthy snacks, and discovered how smart snacking can taste great. Kids and adults got to sample a variety of treats from the Cloquet Natural Foods store, including sunflower butter on rice thins, Peanut Butter Bumpers cereal, Tamari pumpkin seeds, Extreme Dark Chocolate, and Sesame Bars with molasses.

... ketchup with another lucky winner

Five-year-old Matthew (Brookston) guessed the winning number of mustard and ketchup packets in the jar and won a Look What's Cookin' birthday hat. The winning number was 400. Sister Marissa (in the background) was amazed but proud of her brother's lucky guess. Anybody out there need 400 packets of mustard/ketchup?

Early bird runs away with the spoon on first day of summer reading program

Nearly 200 children registered for the Library's summer reading program on June 9, the first official sign-up day. The first clue in the citywide treasure hunt for a wooden spoon was also announced: So where did the dish and the spoon run? They ran to the town of Cloquet. Wanting to play, they went to a park and there they are hiding away. One clue was the charm this year when Lilley Minock (8 years old) and her mom (pictured above)went looking for the spoon. They decided to go to the park at Churchill School and look around--a good choice! Lilley wins 100 dollars in Chamber bucks.

The Treasure Hunt was co-sponsored by the Library and Cloquet Community Education. Congratulations, Lilley! Lilley also picked up a fortune cookie at the Library that afternoon. Her fortune read: You have the attitude of a winner. Indeed, she does. Children can continue to register for the Library's Reading Challenge all summer long. Drop by the library and look what's cookin' today.
